Motivational Conversations for Behaviour Change

Every conversation can make a difference to someone's health. This training supports frontline workers and volunteers to support residents in a way that feels natural and doesn't add to their workload.

What will participants learn?

The training equips staff with the skills to:

  • Structure conversations to guide behaviour change effectively
  • Use key communication strategies for conversations about wellbeing
  • Strengthen a client's intrinsic motivation for change
  • Apply behaviour change principles in practice
  • Respond to resistance to change
  • Support people to create and sustain their own behaviour change action plan
  • Review and adapt goals with people across multiple contacts

Who is it for?

This training is open to anyone who has regular contact with members of the public, including staff and volunteers working in: health and social care, housing services, primary and secondary care, mental health services, voluntary sector, and local authority services.

What does the course include?

  • Key behaviour change theories and models
  • Skills and techniques to facilitate health-related conversations
  • How to assess and increase someone's readiness to change
  • A structured conversations framework to follow
  • Tools to use during difficult conversations
  • Goal setting and action planning techniques
  • Opportunities to practice key techniques during the training
  • A reference sheet to support participants to put these tools into practice
This is recommended as a half-day course. All of our courses can be delivered in person or online. Depending on requirements, we can also offer more in-depth training packages with multi-day, follow-up, and train-the-trainer options.

Why choose our training?

To maximise training value and effectiveness, we offer:

  • Content tailored to participant needs through pre-engagement with client teams
  • Evidence-based approaches like Making Every Contact Count (MECC) and Motivational Interviewing (MI)
  • Interactive learning, including simulations and real-world skills practice
  • Follow-up support to help staff implement their new skills
  • Continuous refinement of our courses through evaluation and participant feedback
I already use many of the skills mentioned, but it was good to have time to reflect on how I use the different aspects. I learnt that my practice would benefit the client with a greater emphasis on summarising than I currently do.

I found the way the theory was linked to real-life situations really helpful. It made everything feel relevant and much easier to understand.

The trainer, Robyn, was engaging and enthusiastic in the delivery of the session. The session was well-paced with a good mix of trainer input and participant input.
